About Us

Here at Wood Street Nursery & Forest School we strive to make our children confident and competent learners. We believe children are leaders of their own learning and capable to achieve anything when given the right opportunities. As adults we teach the children through playful experience, as we believe this is when true meaningful discoveries happen though deep and motivated engagement.

Using a key person centred approach we provide each unique child with high quality interactions to embark on a journey of discovery together. Additionally, rich environmental experiences are extremely beneficial for young children to learn about the world in which we live.  This is why we at Wood Street Nursery & Forest School provide weekly forest school, library and food shopping experiences for our children.

We strive to be a truly inclusive setting and will always adapt our environment and teaching methods to suit the needs of all children regardless of age, ability, gender, religion or ethnicity.

About Wood Street Nursery & Forest School

Our Ethos and Curriculum

At Wood Street Nursery & Forest School we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Development Matters. The curriculum is based on different ways in which a child engages with other people and their environment.

Three main characteristics underpin learning and development across all areas:
•    Playing and exploring
•    Active learning
•    Creating and thinking critically

These characteristics support your child to become an effective and motivated learner which will support them through becoming school ready, throughout school and their adult life. This will be supported by the opportunities and experiences on offer which you will see in our enabling environment, positive relationships and the learning and development of all children. Our main aim is to encourage all children to be independent, self-motivated learners and to be equipped with the resilience skills to deal with any challenges they may face.

The EYFS and our curriculum is divided into prime and specific areas:

Prime Areas
The prime areas are fundamental to support development in all other areas. They develop in response to relationships and experiences they include,
•    Communication and language
•    Personal, social, and emotional development
•    Physical development

Specific Areas
•    Literacy
•    Problem solving, numeracy and reasoning
•    Understanding of the world
•    Expressive arts and design

These seven areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it is suitable for very young children, and is designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests. Through the EYFS, children learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking, which takes place both indoors and outside.

In the early years children learn through play and exploration, the adults plan both adult supported and child-initiated activities that will enable your child to develop social skills, self- confidence, and independence in a range of contexts.

At Wood Street Nursery & Forest School we encourage our children to explore and have fun inside and outside in all weathers. We offer a variety of fun learning activities and experiences both inside and outside, utilising toys, arts and crafts, games, equipment and materials which develop the children physically, educationally and emotionally.

We teach phonics, using a range of active and exciting ways to engage the children to learn their letters and sounds and focus on different sounds weekly. Alongside phonics the children develop their fine motor skills providing them with the foundations for becoming effective readers and writers.

Testimonials

My daughter absolutely loves coming to nursery where she is always greeted with a smile by Kelly and her amazing team. She has come on in leaps and bounds this term and we are so thankful for the creative and exciting learning opportunities that are presented to her each week. The setting is beautiful and suits my daughter perfectly, who loves being outside!
I am also impressed with the communication and updates that we are given, keeping us up to date with what they are learning about and any things that they need.
I would whole heartedly recommend Woodstreet Nursery and Forest Preschool. I think that they are offering something amazing to inspire the next generation of young people!

I was sending my daughter to a local nursery where after a month she was still sobbing at the end of the day. However, after just a couple of days here, she was enjoying nursery life.
I honestly could not be happier. Kelly is warm and welcoming and the communication is great. My girl adores being outside and the forest school element is just wonderful. We have to use the wrap around care due to our jobs and to pick up and they’re having a stroll in the afternoon to feed the ducks and collect conkers is exactly what children should be doing. She’s made pancakes for snack, had marshmallows round a fire and been out painting fences all within 3 weeks of being there. We did sing and sign with our girl and the fact they use Makaton is brilliant. The best decision I’ve ever made.

We have been attending since Oct 2022. This setting has been a home from home for us. Kelly prides herself in providing an enriched environment and the activities are memorable for the children. We'll be sad when my eldest goes to school in Sept, but I know my younger twins will continue to adore the setting and all of the staff. They take advantage of their forest school setting and that is exactly what children need at this age. Kelly has been so supportive of every issue or health concern we have had with our 3 girls (from suspected allergies to suspected absent seizures) and her attentiveness has been second to none. We are eternally grateful for this support! Each and every member of staff here are amazing, thank you all!

I highly recommend Tiny Acorns to any parent who is looking for a caring, active and stimulating setting for their child/children. I feel reassured everyday I drop him off, he is happy to be there and has made lots of friends. As a parent I am always kept in the loop at pick up with his daily activities, this is also sent out through an online diary which is fantastic when your in a rush! Joshy has come on in leaps and bounds, he enjoys the weekly Library visits and exploring nature at forest school. Kelly and her staff make my life as a mother a lot easier knowing that my son is in safe hands. Thank you all.

My son suffers from separation anxiety, and I choose this nursery as it had a “home from home feel “ The staff at Tiny acorns have been superb reassuring both him and me 😊 now he loves going in and his progression is amazing he’s only 2 and singing the alphabet! Great work from the team I would highly recommend this nursery.

Tiny Acorns is brilliant for Lewis! He loves going to learn and play with his friends, the whole team are amazing and will help with whatever needs Lewis has, he has to wear glasses with a patch over his eye and won’t wear it for me but will wear it for the girls at Tiny Acorns. I know when I go to work I have nothing to worry about as Lewis is being very looked after. Thank you everyone for your hard work and help that you do for Lewis! Gary and I appreciate it very much.
